Wow, we've learned six rows of sound blends of the Ya, Yu and Yo digraphs. See how far you've come already?!
Learning a new language takes time and perseverance. When you put that time in, you can learn! There's still a ways to go, though, so let's get to it. Row seven brings us the rya, ryu and ryo digaphs, which are a bit tricky to pronounce. If you have the benefit of knowing Spanish or Italian, the 'r' sound is very similar to the 'r' sound in those languages but not as forced. In Japanese, it's a gentler sound.
りゃ Rya is a blend of the 'r' sound and the 'ya' sound - r'yah.
りゅ Ryu is a blend of the 'r' sound and the 'yu' sound - r'you. りょ Ryo is a blend of the 'r' sound and the 'yo' sound - r'yoh.
Here are some words containing these sounds:
りゃく Ryaku = abbreviation りゅう Ryū = dragon りょこう Ryokō = travel りょうり Ryōri = cooking りょうしん Ryōshin = parents (Just a reminder, the long vowel sounds are represented above by the ū and ō. In romaji, you may also see them written as uu and ou.)
Have you guessed why this is one of my favorite sets? Let me know in the comment section below.
Okay, I have another free practice writing sheet for you. Have fun writing and practicing this week's sounds!
