I don't claim to be the best at grammar but being a voracious reader has made me aware of what good grammar is and what it is not. I make mistakes too, but usually I catch them and correct them. (This blog is evidence of that. Except who has time to reedit "on the fly" writing like this on a regular basis?) What, you say, "Who cares about grammar?" <Jumps up and down waving her hand> I do! I do!
Believe it or not, there are some of us out there that are still able to detect and be disturbed by glaring grammar errors. This is especially true for advertising campaigns, newspaper articles and interoffice documents that are meant for everyone to see. Glaring grammar errors make the perpetrator seem less than skilled, less than intelligent and less than trustworthy in the eyes of those who are able to recognize them immediately. After all, if your business depends upon accuracy and you have such a visible error, what does that say about your business? Let me give you a three examples of, in my opinion, what good grammar is NOT. Walla vs. Voilà This word is used to mean something like "ta da." Ok, technically this isn't English grammar but come on! Still, I guess it's understandable if you're spelling phonetically. So, for the record, voilà (which is French, means "see there" or "there it is" or "behold." It can even mean, "ta da." Then vs. Than We're all taught about sound-alike words in elementary school and middle school. Words like your and you're; two, to and too; it's and its. But these two words do not sound alike. "First he walked into the store, than he..." ARGH! Or, worse, "He was taller then she was." Wrong, wrong, wrong. They are not interchangeable! "Then" is an adverb. "Than" is a conjunction (and in some cases a preposition). Adverbs modify a verb, adjective or other adverb.* Conjunctions join words, phrases, clause or sentences.** To put it simply, if you are talking about time, use "then." Examples: I stirred in the eggs then I poured in the milk; When it stops raining then come and get me; Turn right at the traffic light then turn right at the meat market. If you're comparing two things, use "than." Examples: She is much smarter than he is. I'd rather walk than take the bus. Rather than paint the walls, I'll use wallpaper. Not So Much I'm not saying that this term can never be used. I'm saying that most of the time it is used incorrectly. Seeing as I am not an English teacher nor a professional grammarian I won't go into why it's wrong as it's being used these days "..., not so much!" I, however, will say that whenever the phrase is used I'd rather hear "not as much" or "not as much as..." instead. * Dictionary.com about adverbs ** Dictionary.com about conjunctions

Finally, I understand the enormity of the B.P. disaster. On some level, I did understand. However, after watching Anderson Cooper 360 and Larry King Live I have a greater understanding of what occurred and how much worse it is (and will be) than I thought. If you're curious about what actually might have caused the explosion on the oil rig and/or want more information check out the following: Anderson Cooper 360 James Cameron on LKL T. Boone Pickens on LKL Experts on Larry King Live Or, if you'd rather watch LKL here see below. |
