Here it is the end of the month and I'm still unpacking boxes from my move. It's a bit depressing.
But what has REALLY gotten me down, is that I've discovered that wireless internet (via those supposedly amazing wifi cards) is a great deal LESS than amazing. Not only does watching a YouTube video or two suck up most of the alloted bandwidth, but there are peaks and valleys in speed (way more valleys than peaks, in my humble opinion!) which make regular internet research and surfing next to impossible. Which brand do I have, you ask? The MiFi 2200. What they don't tell you is that the MiFi gets incredibly hot during operation. When it gets that hot, your internet speed drops. My solution has been to set the MiFi on one of those laptop cooling fans, on the fan side not the exhaust side. That keeps it cooler (never terribly cool--but enough to keep it operational) and restores some of the speed. What they also don't tell you is that there are times of the day when even the coolest MiFi will generate speeds so slow they wouldn't beat a turtle in race. What's with that? I'm not a geek (just a wannabe geek) so I can't begin to understand why it can be so very, very slow. The coverage map says 3G speeds. I don't get it. So much for wireless internet. Still, you'd think there would have to be an alternative here in the desert.... So while walking away waiting for my search pages to load (and that was a great deal of walking away, doing chores and coming back to find my pages half-loaded) I began to research the alternatives. My research into high speed internet here, however, has proved very disappointing. Those satellite internet companies which offer high speeds(I won't name names, they're easily Googleable) also handicap you with usage caps. For a gamer like me who likes to participate in MMORPG game play and who is constantly (well not now obviously) downloading new beta games and internet gaming content, those caps basically mean that I'd probably be limited to one download or two per month and probably be cut of mid-download at that. Not to mention the impossibility of all other internet usage on those months that I need to download. So, this post is sort of a call to action. You intuitive, techno geek individuals out there: develop a way (a legal way, of course) to have high speed internet out here in the rural areas, where DSL and Cable are not available, without the caps or with caps that are high enough to meet the needs of the gaming community!!! Thank you! <Standing off her soapbox>

I apologize for the long, long break between posts here. I was in the process of packing and moving. It took a long time because I wasn't only moving myself. I was moving my family as well. My elderly mom doesn't travel well and moving was even more stressful on her. The pets, two of which were adopted after their family had to move and give them up, were very stressed and needy. The planning and coordination of the packing, moving and storage, not to mention the logistics of the physical move of over 100 miles away from where we lived was overwhelming and I'm sure we're all candidates for post traumatic moving stress syndrome.
And, I'm not being facetious! Undergoing that big a change in your life on top of the emotional aspect of having to go through all your belongings to give away or throw away parts of your life because you have no more room to take them is very upsetting. To punctuate how difficult a move it was, it took us an entire week of every day moving the contents of the yard and garden, plants that we couldn't bear to lose, like the self-watering container plants (see previous posts) and the container fruit trees, etc., boxes, furniture and other belonging to storage or to the new house or too the Good Will donation center. Every day! That's seven days of hard, physical labor which included waking up before sunrise working all day and then going to sleep well after 2 am only to start the same routine again. And in the middle of it all, we had to clean the house because moving is a messy process. But, that's what happens when you live in a house and have to move all of its contents to another house and you can't afford movers. I won't ramble on in this post (any more than I already have). I'll just say that I'll be back more actively once the last box/bin is unpacked. And, sadly, that might take a few more days. Thank you again for your patience. |
