Here's the last batch of hiragana characters that take the dakuten. And, guess what, they also take a new diacritical mark called the handakuten, or maru. The handakuten is shaped like a small circle and it's placed in the same location as the dakuten. Ok, let's have a look at these new sounds: By now you should know the 6th column sounds: ha, hi, hu (fhu), he and ho. When we add the dakuten, they have the following sounds: ば this sound like the sound a sheep makes baa. び this sounds like the word bee ぶ this sounds like the word boo べ this sounds like the beginning sound of the word bet (beh) ぼ this sounds like the beginning sound of the word boat (boh) The next set has the handakuten or the maru. Maru means zero, or circle, so it's the common name for this diacritic. Let's look at how these new characters sound: ぱ this sounds like the beginning sound of the word pot (pah) ぴ this sounds like the vegetable, pea. ぷ this sounds like the beginning of the word pool. ぺ this sounds like the beginning of the word pet (peh). ぽ this sounds like the beginning of the word pole (poh) There you have it, ten more new sounds. Here a practice sheet
Next time we'll continue with the alphabet columns. Until then, mata ne.

Konnichi wa! Last week I introduced the dakuten and gave you the first set of alphabet characters that can take the dakuten. This week, I'll give you two more sets that do. That's ten more sounds to practice saying and writing. Take care learning these sets as they don't follow the pattern of mearly replacing one sound with the new sound across the board. For example, we would expect that し (shi) would take on the sound of zhi but instead it sounds like じ, or ji.
Ok, here's your freebie for the week. This time it's two hiragana practice writing sheets!! Thank you so much for reading my blog and learning Japanese with me :)
If you've been watching along with the Japanesepod101.com videos you have already learned about the dakuten (or tenten). Even so, I think it's time to introduce these special diacritical marks. が this sounds like the beginning sound of got (gah). ぎ this sounds like the beginning sound of the word gear, or the liquid butter: ghee. ぐ this sounds like the word goo, or the beginning sound of the word goop. げ this sounds like the beginning sound of the word get (geh). ご this sounds like the word go (goh). Here are some words using these new sounds: えいが English (the language) - Eigo (eh ee go) かぎ key(s) - Kagi (kah ghee) ご く If you like Dragonball Z you'll recognize this one: Goku (goh koo). Not all the hiragana characters take a dakuten. Next week, I'll go over more of those that do. Before you go, don't forget to download this weeks freebie writing practice sheet:
Thanks for reading! See you next time, mata ne.
