Ohayo! If you'll remember, last time we discussed kya, kyu and kyo. Of course there are more ya, yu and yo digraphs. So today we'll continue to practice with sha, shu and sho.
Let's take a look at our digraph chart again:
しゃ sha sounds like the beginning sound of shop or shot (sha)
しゅ shu sounds like the beginning sound of shoot or the word shoe しょ sho sounds like a short version of the beginning sound of show (shoh)
Here are some words that contain the sha, shu and sho digraphs:
かいしゃ kaisha = company (like in business) らいしゅ raishu = next week ちょうしょく choushoku (chō shoku) = breakfast
It won't hurt to review the pronunciation of the digraphs again in the Japanesepod101.com video below. The digraph section begins at 1:45:
And that's it for this week. Here's another practice writing sheet for you. Until next week. Mata raishu.

Konnichi wa, mina san. Good afternoon everyone. Sorry for the missed post this last Wednesday. We just came back from a cross-country trip and I must have scheduled my post for the wrong date. But here it is, just a few days late. I hope you enjoy it!
************ We're nearly done with the hiragana alphabet so I feel that it's time to introduce the Ya, Yu and Yo digraphs (yōon/youon pronounced yo ohn). First of all, when we write these characters, the ya, yu and yo are considerably smaller than the first character. For example kya is a combination of ki and ya. The ki character is written at a normal size but the ya is written much smaller to show that it's a digraph. Now about pronunciation. When we combine ki and ya in the digraph, we don't pronounce the "i" (ee) sound of the ki, just the "k" sound blended with the ya sound: k + ya = kya. This is important because if the ya, yu and yo are written full sized in the word the pronunciation will be totally different and therefore will be an entirely different word. For example, the word きよう pronounced kyō (meaning today) is totally different from the word きよう kiyō pronounced kee yoh (meaning handy or skilled). Let's look at the chart:
How about some words using these new digraph sounds:
(hint the "ō" or "ou" is pronounced like the long "o" sound in the word open)
At this point, it's useful to review the Japanesepod101.com video about the ya, yu and yo digraphs. The digraph section starts at 1:45:

Wow, we're almost done with the hiragana alphabet!! Isn't that amazing? There are three columns left so without hesitation let's see what we've learned so far:

Yes, we have come a long way and we're not going to stop now, right? Let's learn the next set, column 9:
First of all, the "r" sound in Japanese is similar to the Spanish "r" sound (not the trilled "r" - just the regular "r" sound) but not as forced. It's almost as if it were more of an "l" sound than an "r" sound because the tongue is touching just behind your teeth when making this sound. But, anyway let's begin.
ら this sounds like what a cheerleader would say, "rah, rah, rah." り this sounds like the beginning sound of reed. る this sounds like the the ending sound of kanga-roo or the beginning sound of the word route. れ this sounds like the beginning sound in the word rent. ろ this sounds like the beginning of the word row (roh).
Now for some words using these new sounds:
ひらがな Hiragana = the Japanese alphabet or syllabary (one component of the Japanese writing system) はたらく hataraku = to work (at a job) からい karai = Hot (spicy) あたらしい atarashii = new みどり midori = green ひだり hidari = left (the direction) ふるい furui = old, aged うれしい ureshii = happy ろく roku = six (the number)
Isn't that great?! Now you have so many more new words to add to your vocabulary!
