Loving the dark

As a present to ourselves, on January 11th my friend and I took off for Quartzite, Arizona and attended the RTR (Rubber Tramp Rendezvous) hosted by Bob Wells of Cheap RV Living. We attended last year's event and I thought it was a bit crowded then. This year they were estimating that over 3000 people attended. It was pretty crowded and finding a good spot to camp in was taking a long time for us. We were getting frustrated driving around. Luckily another attendee let us park next to his rig for a couple of days as he was saving the spot for a family member who wasn't there yet. It was so nice of him to help us out like that because it was getting late and trying to find a spot in the dark would have been pretty difficult. It just goes to show that, for the most part, people at the RTR are so kind and caring. It's that spirit of community and belonging that makes the RTR the special event that it is. As it happens, the next day he found a spot he liked better and we stayed in our spot till we left. It was a beautiful and quiet area near the no-generator zone. Our neighbors were friendly and it was a very nice place to be. One of the goals I set for myself for this trip was to meet and thank a few of the Y0uTubers I follow. We got to meet a couple but not everyone I wanted to.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I was participating in the weight goal challenge started by Jamie from Enigmatic Nomadics. (In total, I've lost 10 pounds so far. And, I've kept it off!) Jamie is a nomad who now lives in his schoolie (a converted school bus). He's an important part of the van-dwelling community and we knew he would be at the RTR. We walked over to the music section of camp but didn't get to see him that day. When my friend and I went to look for him a day or two later, he was right by his schoolie and we got to say our hellos and thank yous. He was welcoming and wished us well in our travels. We got to meet Carolyn from Carolyn's RV Life after her boondocking seminar. She's pretty much as she is in her videos. Her mottto fits her well because she lives it. Her seminar was very informative and we took away a great deal of information that will help us on the road when we go cross-country again. You can check out Carolyn's channel to learn more about her, and her travels. I was very happy that I got to say a face-to-face thank you to Bob Wells. He is the man behind the RTR and it wouldn't exist without him. I did get to walk past the rigs of a few of the YouTubers I was hoping to talk with, but they weren't home. Maybe next year. All in all, it was such a fun trip. We got to learn all about geocaching, discovered some helpful gadgets to use while traveling, got to see so many different vehicles (RVs, vans, fifth wheels, box trucks, trailers, cars, SUVs, schoolies and many homebrew rigs) and got some ideas of how to make the campervan easier to travel in. Again, thank you to Bob Wells and the BLM folks in Quartzite, Arizona for the wonderful camping and RTR experience. Note: edited to add more information, correct typos and for clarity.
