Hello, everyone! We're back with more vocabulary to help build your conversational skills.
Let's take a look at the following:
Now let's examine the sentence patterns:
I like (something). Watashi wa (something) ga suki desu. I like (something) very much! Watashi wa (something) ga dai suki desu. Or: (Something) wa dai suki desu. I dont like (something) very much. Watashi wa (something) ga amari suki ja nai. Or more polite: I don’t like (something) very much. Watashi wa (something) ga dewa arimasen. I dislike (something). Watashi wa (something) ga kirai desu. I dislike (something) very much! Watashi wa (something) ga dai kirai desu!
Remember, “Watashi wa” can be omitted when it’s clearly understood that you’re talking about yourself.
For example: (Something) が すきです. I like something. (Something) が だいすきです. I really like something. (Something) があまりすきじゃない. I don't like something very much (Something)があまりすきではありません. (Polite) I don't like something very much. (Something)がきらいです. I dislike something. (I hate something.) (Something)がだいきらいです. I dislike something very much. (I hate something very much.) Please note that “hate” is a very strong word. It’s stronger in Japanese than it is in English. Unless you despise something vehemently, you should mostly use “suki ja nai desu” or “suki dewa arimasen” to say you dislike something. Or if you choose to use “kirai” use it sparingly. Also, please note that you can use “dai suki” to mean you “love” something. However, it does not mean “in love” with. In Japanese, you can be “in love” with someone not some thing. To say you “love” or are “in love with” someone you have to use a different word, not “suki”-- which we’ll discuss that in a future post. You can use “suki” to say something is your favorite thing. Check out this pattern: Watashi no suki na (category) wa (thing of that catagory) desu. For example: Watashi no suki na yasai wa burokarii desu. My favorite vegetable is broccoli. Watashi no suki na tabemono wa sushi desu. My favorite food is sushi.
Here are some vocabulary words featuring common categories of things:
趣味 = shumi = hobby(hobbies) 食べ物 = たべもの = tabemono = food(s) 飲み物 = のみもの = nomimono = drink(s) 果物 = くだもの = kudamono = fruit(s) 野菜 = やさい = yasai = vegetable(s) スポーツ = supōtsu = sport(s) ペット = peto = pet(s) 色 = iro = color(s)
There are so many different things you can like (or dislike). With the next several posts, I'll introduce items from the above categories (and more) that you can use with these new sentence patterns.
In the meantime, here's this week's practice writing sheet using suki and kirai:
That's it for this week. I will do my best to continue posting during my vacation. However if I'm a little late or miss a week, I apologize. Remember to check out this post for more Japanese learning resources to continue your learning practice. Until next time, Thank You for reading!
