Good afternoon, everyone! みなさん、こんにちは!I have new vocabulary for you this week. But first, let's go over the answers to last week's thought assignment (#8): For #6 there is another way to say this if you're talking with friends in a casual situation. See if you can guess how for this mini thought assignment and I'll show the answer at the end of this post. Now, for today's subject: Animals or dōbutsu. Here's a list of common animals: Let's look at ways we can use this new vocabulary: 私は犬が大好きです。 犬は私の好きな動物です。 わたしは いぬ がだいすきです。いぬはわたしのすきなどうぶつです。 Watashi wa inu ga dai suki desu. Inu wa watashi no suki na dōbutsu desu. I love (really like) dogs. Dogs are my favorite animals. 私はイグアナが好きですが、ヘビは好きではありません。 わたしは いぐあながすきですが、へびはすきではありません。 (or ... へびはすきじゃない when it's casual) Watashi wa iguana ga suki desu ga, hebi wa suki de wa arimasen (or hebi wa suki ja nai when it's casual). I like iguanas but I don’t like snakes. Note: Desuga (ですが) is an inflection of desu that implies a hesitation, as does the English words “but” and "however". Okay, that's it for this week. Be sure to practice these sentence patterns with each of the new vocabulary words for animals. Also, please check out my SubscribeStar for bonus content for subscribers. Thank you for reading! Mini-thought assignment answer:
ガーデニングは私の好きな趣味じゃない。 ガーデニングはわたしのしゅみじゃない。 Gardening is not my favorite hobby. (When speaking casually with friends or family.)

If you'll recall, last time we talked about how to say you like something or dislike something. This week, I'll be adding more vocabulary to help you have more things to describe liking or disliking.
Let's go over some now:
Here are the sentence patterns we learned last time. If you’ll recall we discussed how to express likes and dislikes. Let’s take the category “hobbies”. You can say you like your hobby or pastime as follows:
Watashi no suki ga (hobby) desu. I like (hobby). For example: Watashi no suki ga ryōri desu. I like cooking. To say it’s your favorite hobby, you can use this pattern: Watashi no suki na (category) wa (thing) desu. Watashi no suki na shumi wa (pastime) desu.
Let’s practice:
You can also say what your hobby is or isn’t like this:
(Pastime) wa watashi no shumi desu. (Pastime) is my hobby. (Pastime) wa watashi no shumi dewa arimasen. (Pastime) is not my hobby. Let’s review how to say you don't like something: I don't like (something) very much. Watashi wa (something) ga amari suki ja nai. Or More politely: Watashi wa (something) ga dewa arimasen. I dislike (something). Watashi wa (something) ga kirai desu. I dislike (something) very much! Watashi wa (something) ga dai kirai desu! And, remember you can omit the Watashi at the beginning of the sentence if you are the subject and it’s understood that you’re talking about yourself. Now, for Thought Assignment #8 you can try translating the following: 1. What is your favorite hobby? 2. My favorite hobby is dancing. 3. I like sports. 4. My favorite hobby is writing. 5. I don’t like cooking. I really like singing. 6. Gardening is not my favorite hobby. 7. I hate (dislike) singing. My favorite hobby is reading.
Okay. That's it for this week. For bonus content for subscribers, please check out my SubscribeStar page. Thanks for reading! See you next week.
Hello, everyone. I'm finally back from vacation and, if all goes well, I should have a post for you this coming Wednesday. In the meantime: Practice, practice, practice!
