If you'll recall, last time we talked about how to say you like something or dislike something. This week, I'll be adding more vocabulary to help you have more things to describe liking or disliking.
Let's go over some now:
Here are the sentence patterns we learned last time. If you’ll recall we discussed how to express likes and dislikes. Let’s take the category “hobbies”. You can say you like your hobby or pastime as follows:
Watashi no suki ga (hobby) desu. I like (hobby). For example: Watashi no suki ga ryōri desu. I like cooking. To say it’s your favorite hobby, you can use this pattern: Watashi no suki na (category) wa (thing) desu. Watashi no suki na shumi wa (pastime) desu.
Let’s practice:
You can also say what your hobby is or isn’t like this:
(Pastime) wa watashi no shumi desu. (Pastime) is my hobby. (Pastime) wa watashi no shumi dewa arimasen. (Pastime) is not my hobby. Let’s review how to say you don't like something: I don't like (something) very much. Watashi wa (something) ga amari suki ja nai. Or More politely: Watashi wa (something) ga dewa arimasen. I dislike (something). Watashi wa (something) ga kirai desu. I dislike (something) very much! Watashi wa (something) ga dai kirai desu! And, remember you can omit the Watashi at the beginning of the sentence if you are the subject and it’s understood that you’re talking about yourself. Now, for Thought Assignment #8 you can try translating the following: 1. What is your favorite hobby? 2. My favorite hobby is dancing. 3. I like sports. 4. My favorite hobby is writing. 5. I don’t like cooking. I really like singing. 6. Gardening is not my favorite hobby. 7. I hate (dislike) singing. My favorite hobby is reading.
Okay. That's it for this week. For bonus content for subscribers, please check out my SubscribeStar page. Thanks for reading! See you next week.
