Wordly Wednesday: Learning Japanese. Katakana Digraph Blends Cha, Chu, Cho and Nya, Nyu, Nyo3/6/2019 Ohayo! Here we are with two new sets of katakana digraph sound blends to learn. If you'd like to review the digraph sounds, please refer to my lessons on the hiragana digraph blends as they have the same sounds (Rows 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 of the hiragana digraph table). Let's go to the katakana digraph table: Remember that in digraphs the ya, yu and yo (ャ,ュ andョ) characters are written slightly smaller. This is important because if written full size the pronunciation is different and the meaning of the word will be different as well. Last week, we reviewed the first two rows. This week we'll tackle the next two, rows 3 and 4. First row 3 sounds: チヤ Cha sounds like the dance name the cha cha. チユ Chu is like the sound of the word chew. チヨ Cho is like the beginning sound of the word choke (choh) Here are some words that contain these sound blends: チャプター Chaputa = Chapter (cha pooh tah) チャット Chatto = Chat (as in online chat) (cha toh) チューインガム Chuingamu = Chewing Gum (chu een gah moo) チョコ Choco = Chocolate (cho koh) Now, row 4 sounds: ニヤ Nya is like the sound a Japanese cat makes "nya, nya." ニユ Nyu is almost like the word new (nyoo) ニヨ Nyo is almost like the ending sound of the company Sanyo (nyoh) Here are some words containing these sounds: ニュース Nyusu = News (nyoo soo) ニューハンプシャー Nyuhampusha = New Hampshire (ny00 ham pooh sha) ニョッキ Nyokki = Gnocchi (the Italian dumpling) (nyoh kee) This ends this week's lesson.
