As you may have noticed, there wasn't a post here last week. My apologies. My friend had a death in the family and I was house and dog sitting. Somehow I didn't find the time to blog here. While I was there, I did practice my hiragana in my down time. It occurred to me that I should post about it here as I found it important in my Japanese pronunciation to memorize the hiragana as well.
So, I'll start at the beginning with the basic vowel sounds.
If you've studied any romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian), then these sounds should be very similar to the vowels in those languages.
あ a - like the a sound in almond, ah, or the "o" sound in top. い i is like the ee sound in sleep or sheep. う u is a short oo sound like sound in pool, school. え e is like the eh sound in edit or empty. お o is a short oh sound like in oat or smoke. And there you have the vowel sounds. See, wasn't that easy? In my next post, I'll give you more sounds and the corresponding hiragana. But for now, here's a video from Japanesepod101.com. Mata ne. And, if you decide to join Japanesepod101.com, please use my affiliate link. Thank you :) Correction: Oops, I put the wrong video in. Here's the correct video: Wait! Please, don't go yet! As a small gift for reading my blog, I've designed a worksheet to help you practice writing these vowels. Enjoy.
