Wow, we're almost done with the hiragana alphabet!! Isn't that amazing? There are three columns left so without hesitation let's see what we've learned so far:

Yes, we have come a long way and we're not going to stop now, right? Let's learn the next set, column 9:
First of all, the "r" sound in Japanese is similar to the Spanish "r" sound (not the trilled "r" - just the regular "r" sound) but not as forced. It's almost as if it were more of an "l" sound than an "r" sound because the tongue is touching just behind your teeth when making this sound. But, anyway let's begin.
ら this sounds like what a cheerleader would say, "rah, rah, rah." り this sounds like the beginning sound of reed. る this sounds like the the ending sound of kanga-roo or the beginning sound of the word route. れ this sounds like the beginning sound in the word rent. ろ this sounds like the beginning of the word row (roh).
Now for some words using these new sounds:
ひらがな Hiragana = the Japanese alphabet or syllabary (one component of the Japanese writing system) はたらく hataraku = to work (at a job) からい karai = Hot (spicy) あたらしい atarashii = new みどり midori = green ひだり hidari = left (the direction) ふるい furui = old, aged うれしい ureshii = happy ろく roku = six (the number)
Isn't that great?! Now you have so many more new words to add to your vocabulary!
