Konnichi wa, Mina San! Good afternoon. Today we'll be going over the Japanese words for colors. Please take a look at the chart below: The above chart only shows some of the color names. There are many more colors names in Japanese. Also, the color names above are in the noun form. When talking about the color names in abstract you would just use the noun form. However, some color names change form when used as adjectives and placed before the object being described. For example: red = aka; the red apple = akai ringo blue = ao; the blue book = aoi hon black = kuro; the black shoes = kuroi kutsu yellow = kiiro; the yellow dress = kiiroi doresu white = shiro; the white clouds = shiroi kumo And so on. However if the color word is before the desu, the noun form is used. For example: The yellow dress = kiiroi doresu The dress is yellow = doresu wa kiiro desu Some color words sometimes take a "no" or "の" when used as adjectives, placed before the object being described. If you'll recall "no" denotes possession. For example: 茶色の犬 ちゃいろ の いぬ chairo no inu the brown dog 緑のリンゴ みどり の リンゴ midori no ringo the green apple Let's see some other examples of the usage of these color words: 私の犬は茶色です わたし の いぬ は ちゃいろです Watashi no inu wa chairo desu. My dog is brown. 象は灰色です。 ぞう は はいいろです 。 Zō wa haiiro desu. The elephant is gray. あの猫は白いです 。 あの ねこ は しろいです 。 Ano neko wa shiroi desu. That cat is white. 紫色の本は大きい むらさきいろ の ほん は おうきい Murasaki iro no hon wa ookii. The purple book is big. ピンクの魚は小さい ピンクのさかなはちいさい Pinku no sakana wa chiisai. The pink fish is small. Okay, that's it for this time. Here's a nice video from Japanesepod101.com featuring some colors: Thank you for reading. I appreciate it. For bonus content, please check our my SubscribeStar page. Good afternoon, everyone! みなさん、こんにちは!I have new vocabulary for you this week. But first, let's go over the answers to last week's thought assignment (#8): For #6 there is another way to say this if you're talking with friends in a casual situation. See if you can guess how for this mini thought assignment and I'll show the answer at the end of this post. Now, for today's subject: Animals or dōbutsu. Here's a list of common animals: Let's look at ways we can use this new vocabulary: 私は犬が大好きです。 犬は私の好きな動物です。 わたしは いぬ がだいすきです。いぬはわたしのすきなどうぶつです。 Watashi wa inu ga dai suki desu. Inu wa watashi no suki na dōbutsu desu. I love (really like) dogs. Dogs are my favorite animals. 私はイグアナが好きですが、ヘビは好きではありません。 わたしは いぐあながすきですが、へびはすきではありません。 (or ... へびはすきじゃない when it's casual) Watashi wa iguana ga suki desu ga, hebi wa suki de wa arimasen (or hebi wa suki ja nai when it's casual). I like iguanas but I don’t like snakes. Note: Desuga (ですが) is an inflection of desu that implies a hesitation, as does the English words “but” and "however". Okay, that's it for this week. Be sure to practice these sentence patterns with each of the new vocabulary words for animals. Also, please check out my SubscribeStar for bonus content for subscribers. Thank you for reading! Mini-thought assignment answer:
ガーデニングは私の好きな趣味じゃない。 ガーデニングはわたしのしゅみじゃない。 Gardening is not my favorite hobby. (When speaking casually with friends or family.) Wordly Wednesday: Learning Japanese. Building Vocabulary: Going To Work, Professions in Japanese6/19/2019
Good morning! I hope you all had a great week. Before we get into this week's topic, here are the answers to last week's Thought Assignment (#6):
I hope you found this assignment easy to do. If you looked back to the posts on Family Names and reviewed the Nationalities, then it should have been a breeze. Again if you didn't get them all, with a little more practice I'm sure you'll remember them better.
In the bonus content for SubscribeStar subscribers, I introduced one more way to say where your from: Watashi wa Amerika shusshin desu. Just make note of that, because you may hear that as well. Today we'll be adding to your conversational skills with new vocabulary.
Let's get to some common professions.
Let's practice some sentences in Thought Assignment #7. Before we begin, there are a couple of ways to say what your name is. Here are two:
私は ______ です。 わたしは ______です。 Watashi wa _______. (Or Boku wa ______. For males) My name is _______. and 私の名前は ______ です。 わたしのなまえは ______ です。 Watashi no namae wa _______ desu. If you're asking someone's name remember to add the polite "0" before namae. The word for you (singular is anata - あなた) and the possessive pronoun is "no" の. However you can omit it. And please note that first introductions include はじめまして (hajimemashite=nice to meet you) and よろしくおねがいします(yoroshikuonegaishimasu=please treat me well, please be kind to me). はじめまして。 My name is _____ . よろしくおねがいします。 Nice to meet you. My name is ______. Please treat me well. Okay, see if you can say the following sentences for Thought Assignment #7: 1. Nice to meet you. My name is _______. Please be kind to me. 2. What's your name? 3. I'm from Germany. 4. Where are you from? 5. What's your profession? 6. I'm a firefighter? Good luck!
At this point you should be able to introduce yourself, say where you're from, how old you are, discuss your family (and how many of them there are) their ages and nationalities, and include professions as well. Can you believe it? Look how far you've come and how much you've learned so far. It's amazing! Good work!
Here's this week's free practice writing sheet:
I hope you enjoy your free writing sheet! Until next time, mata ne!
