Good morning! Last week I gave you a thought assignment. These additional counters will help with the answers to that.
Here are more age counters:
I should mention that there is another way to say the age 20: hatachi (はたち). So, you can use that as well. For example:
I am 20 years old. = Watashi wa nijussai desu. (わたしは にじゅっさい です) = Watashi wa hatachi desu. (わたしは はたち です) Now that we have those, let's go over the answers to last week's thought assignment:
Are you seeing the pattern now?
If the age ends in the number 10 (jyū, じゅう), you use the counter jussai (じゅっさい). And, if the age ends in the number 8 (hachi, はち), you use the counter hassai (はっさい).
Here's another thought assignment for you. First, review the All in the Family-Part 1 and All in the Family-Part 2 posts, as well as Numbers and Counting in Japanese and the Numbers and Counting in Japanese-Counters Part 1. Now, how would you translate the following?
1. わたしの あねは よんじゅうはっさいです。 2. わたしの おばはろくじゅさいです 3. わたしは にじゅうにさいです 4. わたしの おとうとはにさいです 5. わたしの むすこはにじゅうごさいです
The Kanji for さい is 歳. So when age is written, you'll see it like this:
わたしは 三十歳 です。 Watashi wa sanjussai desu. I'm thirty years old. Okay, that's it for this week. Here's a free practice writing sheet for the new vocabulary:
All right, see you here next week fore more vocabulary practice and the answers to our Thought Assignment #2.
